This summer’s Wimbledon was a drama-filled event, from Jannik Sinner’s epic victory over Alexander Zverev to 21-year-old Linda Nosková’s breakthrough win. For the watch nerds in the crowd, however, one of the tournament’s most exciting cameos was a mysterious timepiece worn by NORQAIN stakeholder and brand ambassador Stan Wawrinka. During his 19th and final Wimbledon appearance, Wawrinka took to the All England Club’s grass courts wearing a previously unseen version of the brand’s Wild ONE Skeleton X-Lite, a working prototype — in Wimbledon white, naturally — that would be put to the test during his 4-hour, 20-minute battle against Matteo Berrettini.

Fans of NORQAIN, the upstart Swiss watch brand co-founded by a group of watch industry veterans and pro athletes, will recognize Wawrinka’s watch as the successor to the Wild ONE Skeleton X-Lite Limited Edition, an ultralight high-performance watch unveiled at Watches & Wonders Geneva in April. Weighing just 45 grams thanks to a case made from X-Lite, a new high-performance carbon-fibre composite, the watch was designed with every aspect optimized for maximum performance. This also extends to its movement, an openworked COSC-certified manufacture calibre co-developed with Sellita featuring a 65-hour power reserve.

Following the success of the Wild ONE Skeleton X-Lite Limited Edition, whose 200-piece run sold out completely before a single watch was delivered, NORQAIN quickly got to work on creating something even wilder. Fortunately, thanks to the brand’s roster of pro athletes, they have the perfect means of testing new prototypes. “The response to the Wild ONE Skeleton X-Lite Limited Edition has been extraordinary, and it inspired us to keep pushing the boundaries of material innovation,” says co-founder Ben Küffer. “We’re constantly exploring and testing new materials to shape the future of the Wild ONE, and there is no better person to put a development watch through its paces than Stan Wawrinka. Seeing it perform under the pressure of Wimbledon is exactly the kind of real-world validation we’re looking for.”

Küffer remains tight-lipped about the makeup of the experimental Wild ONE model, but he is happy to share that it runs the same NORQAIN 4K Manufacture Calibre found in the sold-out Skeleton X-Lite, and it’s built on the same proven Wild ONE Skeleton X-Lite platform. While it doesn’t bring any new mechanical feats to the table, this consistency enables NORQAIN’s engineers to focus on new composite case materials that can withstand sustained, high-stress, real-world wear, such as during a professional tennis match.

According to Wawrinka, the new prototype more than passed the test. “I’ve worn NORQAIN watches on and off the court for years, but this one is unlike anything I’ve worn before,” he says. “Its striking, Wimbledon-inspired white design stands out on the grass courts, while its exceptional comfort lets me focus entirely on my game.
