Following its milestone 50th edition, the Toronto International Film Festival returns for its 51st edition from September 10 to 20, 2026, delivering ten days of highly anticipated premieres, international and Canadian cinema and vibrant street-level energy across downtown Toronto. Venues across the city’s entertainment district — including Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales Theatre, Royal Alexandra Theatre, TIFF Lightbox, and Scotiabank Theatre Toronto — serve as fall’s most critical awards-season launchpad.
The Movies
This year’s programming strikes a sharp balance between auteur filmmakers, star-studded crowd-pleasers and highly anticipated international cinema. Leading the buzz is Danny Boyle’s electrifying Fleet Street saga Ink, starring Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch and Jack O’Connell as rogue tabloid editor Larry Lamb, alongside Jesse Eisenberg’s highly anticipated musical-comedy The Debut, featuring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.
Gala and Special Presentations also highlight Florian Zeller’s wartime drama, Bunker, as well as Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s La Bola Negra, Chris Rock’s Misty Green, and Bassam Tariq’s drama Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, starring Mahershala Ali.
The Tribute Awards
The 8th annual TIFF Tribute Awards gala takes over Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York Hotel on Sunday, September 13, recognizing exceptional lifetime achievements and standout festival turns. Legendary South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong will receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award for his transformative directorial vision, while acting icons Isabelle Huppert and rising British talent Rosalind Eleazar are set to receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Awards.
Oscar winner Helen Mirren will be honoured with the TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award, while Canadian multi-hyphenate Seth Rogen takes home the prestigious TIFF Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award. Dual TIFF Special Tribute Awards will celebrate international screen superstars Penélope Cruz and Fan Bingbing, with Oscar-winning director Siân Heder receiving the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media, Bassam Tariq collecting the Rising Talent Award and cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz honoured with the TIFF Variety Artisan Award.
Who’s Attending TIFF 2026?
With public screenings featuring in-person stage introductions and post-film Q&As, King Street West will see heavy star wattage throughout festival week. Attendees landing in Toronto for gala premieres and red carpets include Jesse Eisenberg, Mahershala Ali, Channing Tatum, Sebastian Stan, Guy Pearce, Jack O’Connell, Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Penélope Cruz, alongside celebrated directors Danny Boyle, Lee Chang-dong, Siân Heder, and Bassam Tariq. The red-carpet footprint will extend into pre-receptions and after-parties across Yorkville and the Financial District.
Special Events
The festival’s opening weekend once again transforms King Street West into the pedestrian-friendly Festival Street promenade, complete with food pop-ups, open-air brand lounges, and free outdoor screenings under the downtown skyline. Centre stage in the public programme is the celebrated In Conversation With… series at TIFF Lightbox, which this year pairs deep career retrospectives with creative craft conversations featuring Seth Rogen unpacking the modern evolution of screen comedy and indie producing; Penélope Cruz and Dame Helen Mirren on their iconic repertoire; and South Korean master Lee Chang-dong pulling back the curtain on his screenwriting. A major highlight of this year’s lineup is a special Making Waves With… session through TIFF Next Wave featuring Canadian breakout star Hudson Williams, who arrives in town with the world premiere of Yaga to unpack his meteoric rise following Heated Rivalry.
