This Autonomous Flying Camera Is About to Make the Selfie Stick Obsolete

Just don’t call it a drone.

The world’s first truly autonomous flying camera is finally here. (You asked for one, right?) The Hover Camera flies through the air with the greatest of ease, taking 13MP pictures and 4K video all at a steady, gentle – what else? – hover.

Created and built by the Beijing startup Zero Zero Robotics, the Hover Camera weighs in at 238 grams, which means it doesn’t need to be registered with the FAA. Its four thin propellers spin within a protective carbon fibre enclosure, so there’s no need to worry about your fingers getting clipped.

There’s no controller with the Hover Camera; the device operates with just a couple of taps on a mobile app. Once the camera is on and ready to move, simply hold it in the air and release it. The camera follows faces and movements using facial and body recognition technology.

The Hover Camera will hopefully hit stores this summer, which means you can finally throw away that selfie stick you’ve always been embarrassed about owning.
