3 Weird Discontinued Olympic Sports They Should Totally Bring Back
Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris — who snagged a bronze medal in slopestyle this weekend after recovering from a horrific accident — will next be competing in big air, a brand new sport at the 2018 Winter Games. Which got us thinking about other Olympic sports that have come and gone over the years. Here are a few discontinued events we’d love the IOC to reintroduce.[1]
Skijoring
Last played: 1928
It involved strapping your feet to skis and your torso to horses (without riders) and going as fast as possible. For some reason, the race was held on a frozen lake.
Live Pigeon Shooting
Last played: 1900
Between 300 and 400 birds were shot out of the sky for this event. Nowadays, they use flying clay targets, but, c’mon, what fun is that?
Speed Skiing
Last played: 1992
The point was to clock the fastest speed while skiing downhill. Last time’s gold medal winner hit 229.299 km/h. Runs almost always ended with competitors crashing into a barrier. Now that’s good TV!
