They Fit the World’s Largest Indoor Waterfall Inside a Singapore Airport
It used to be that we had to spend our time in airports stressed and uncomfortable, counting down the minutes to our scheduled departure in sad, grey environments. Thankfully, the world’s most prominent terminals are now undergoing a paradigm shift — becoming not only great public spaces, but worthwhile destinations in their own right. And while a waterfall in the middle of an airport might sound like a jet lag–induced mirage, in Singapore’s Changi airport, it’s the real deal.
Named the Rain Vortex, the 40-metre-tall wonder — now the world’s largest indoor waterfall — is the centrepiece of Jewel, a new transportation hub that links Changi’s various terminals to Singapore’s public transit system while also introducing 280 restaurants and shops, a hotel, and lush indoor gardens landscaped with over 200 different types of plants. The futuristic greenhouse is the brainchild of Moshe Safdie, the Israeli–Canadian architect behind Montreal’s Habitat 67. Time to go chasing waterfalls.
