The Wild, Sexy, Surprisingly Popular World of Botox, Lasers and Fillers

If you’ve found yourself having conversations about “procedures” and “fixes” lately, you’re not alone. We’ve said all there is to say about serums and moisturizers, and we’re finally digging into the hard stuff. As it turns out, cosmetic procedures are more common than ever, especially for men. A report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons revealed that more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2018, a 29 per cent increase since 2000.

Of course, we’re not advocating going full Carrot Top (Google it) — but a few non-invasive procedures here and there might not be such a bad idea, especially if they can make you look like you’ve been working out harder or simply sleeping better. Still not convinced? Plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Mulholland of SpaMedica will tell you straight up: “Men have gotten roped into the same vanity issues as women. They realize it’s very competitive, both for a date and for a job. You’ve got to look your best.” That means turning to needle injections and lasers, which are surprisingly quick, painless, and quite undetectable. Here’s what you need to know.

BOTOX:

What is it?

Technically, it’s a poison that’s injected to disrupt the signalling processes from your nervous system to your muscles.

Who’s it for?

Anyone who makes facial expressions. (It eases wrinkles and stress lines.)

How long does it last?

The muscle-relaxing effects can last for three to four months.

Is it cheating?

In 2017, it was America’s top non-surgical cosmetic procedure, with 1,548,236 injections performed.

DERMAL FILLER:

What is it?

Hyaluronic acid that’s injected to provide contour and shape, or to correct lines, wrinkles, and frustrating furrows.

Who’s it for?

Men mostly use it to reduce deep smile lines, or sometimes to bulk up their lips.

How long does it last?

Three to six months, depending on the site and amount used.

Is it cheating?

Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body. Fillers simply give you more of it where you want it.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL:

What is it?

Different wavelengths of laser energy are used to permanently eliminate or reduce the growth of unwanted hair.

Who’s it for?

If you find yourself asking, “Where did that come from?” in the shower.

How long does it last?

Indefinitely. Better be sure about this.

Is it cheating?

Laser hair removal has the same goal as other options like shaving or waxing, but once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.

BODY SCULPTING:

What is it?

Body sculpting uses energy to destroy pockets of unwanted fat, often around the love handles.

Who’s it for?

When you’re working hard on your diet and workout but still need a little boost.

How long does it last?

You can bid adieu to these fat cells for good.

Is it cheating?

Consider this just another tool ready to help you max out the results of your healthy lifestyle. Y’know, like açai.
