As I dropped into the driver’s seat of a brand-new Porsche 911, I looked out over the open pavement.
“Floor it,” my instructor, Randy, said.
Did I ever.
For a brief, glorious moment, I forgot that I wasn’t a Le Mans hopeful. Instead, I was at the new Porsche Experience Centre Toronto, located just east of the city, in Pickering. The new facility — the brand’s first in Canada and tenth worldwide — is designed for days like this: where you can experience the precision, technology, and emotion of a Porsche firsthand, then wind down over espresso without ever leaving the property. The energy there feels instantly familiar — groups of friends hanging out, guys trading jokes and sizing up cars before heading out, all with that slight buzz of anticipation.
The building itself is a stunner — sleek glass and warm wood nestled next to a wooded area, part showroom, part garage, part event space, surrounded by an asphalt playground of polished-concrete drift circles and a custom-built two-kilometre driving circuit. It joins North American sister locations in Los Angeles and Atlanta — each a destination for enthusiasts who want to understand what makes a Porsche, well, a Porsche.
Inside, the vibe is refined but relaxed. There’s a café that serves espresso drinks alongside a curated menu. There’s a sim lab, a Porsche Lifestyle store packed with merch, and private executive meeting rooms. It’s easy to imagine a group hosting a morning strategy session, breaking for lunch, and then heading out onto the circuit. And it is the circuit you’re here for. Whether a team gathering, entertaining clients, or getting the boys together for a bachelor party, this is where it’s at. By the time I arrived, a few groups were just finishing — friends recapping who took the turns better, who nailed drifting — everyone chasing the same rush.

After a short classroom introduction — a quick briefing on do’s and don’t’s (“don’t be a jerk” about sums it up) — I was paired with my instructor, Randy, before being guided to a brand-new 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid. Many of the Centre’s instructors are professional race drivers and coaches who teach here in their spare time, and Randy’s calm confidence made that immediately clear. I caught myself wanting to impress him, but mostly to prove something to myself.
We began on the Dynamics Pad: an expanse of asphalt lined with pylons for mastering throttle control and cornering. Randy’s calm voice was equal parts coach and co-pilot: “Look ahead. Ease into it. Brake harder.” Thankfully, Porsche offers PDK automatic transmissions for those of us who are novice stick drivers at best, so I could focus entirely on the feel of the car. My 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid featured multiple driving modes, and I was eased in with each lap as we went from Normal, to Sport, to Sport Plus. There’s also a bright red Sport Response button on the steering wheel that delivers a short burst of extra power for 20 seconds, which was a lot of fun. You feel the weight shift under your hands, the tires bite, the pull pressing into your chest. Every sound hits a different part of your brain.

Next came the drift circle — an asphalt ring with a wetted concrete core that Randy described as “driving on ice.” It’s designed to demonstrate vehicle balance and control at the edge of grip. The all-wheel drive made true drifting a challenge, but with Randy’s guidance, I managed to send the rear out just enough to feel like I’d earned my stripes.
Finally, it was over to the main two-kilometre circuit, designed to evoke iconic corners from around the world — including Laguna Seca’s Corkscrew, the Nürburgring Carousel, and Le Mans’ Porsche Curves. We started with a slow orientation lap, then picked up speed, lap after lap, until the rhythm of braking, turning, and accelerating became second nature. When Randy finally took the wheel for a demonstration run, I understood what mastery really looks like: calm, calculated, effortless speed.
Back in the café, there’s a subtle shift — the adrenaline drops, conversation slows, and the day takes on that warm, satisfied quiet that follows a shared thrill. People linger over coffee, watching cars glide by the windows or browsing in the Porsche Lifestyle Shop. You can also explore the Sim Lab, where you and four friends can compete virtually on legendary courses. And unlike on the real circuit, you can bang those cars up all you want.

For Porsche, these Experience Centres are about immersion, not ownership. They give enthusiasts — and anyone with curiosity — the chance to engage with the brand’s craftsmanship and philosophy firsthand. It’s not about competition; it’s about connection. Whether you came with friends or flew solo, it’s the same feeling: pure, shared awe for what these machines can do. It’s incredible to have the opportunity to do something extraordinary, even for an afternoon, with people who share your passion. It reminds you how much fun it is to do something slightly out of the ordinary with your friends who appreciate the same things. I stepped out of the 911 into the late-day sun, pulse still quick, head still spinning, but the trace of a smile I couldn’t quite hide.
