With seven Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles — a number that ties Michael Schumacher for the F1 record — Lewis Hamilton has become near-constant presence in the headlines, cementing his status in F1 history and even earning a spot on TIME’s ‘Most Influential People’ list.

There’s quite a bit more to the 38-year-old Brit than motorsports and media frenzies, however. Hamilton advocates for social justice in motorsports and beyond, championing Black Lives Matter and speaking out against anti-LGBT legislation. He has also ventured into arts and entertainment, recording music with stars like Christina Aguilera and founding a production company, Dawn Apollo Films. Scattered across so many sectors, these endeavours make Hamilton an enigma of sorts — a Renaissance man, characterized by restless creativity. Teaming up with Kim Jones for the Dior x Lewis Hamilton Winter Capsule Collection, Hamilton tells his story through skiwear.

“Working with Kim and the talented team at Dior has been a dream,” says Lewis Hamilton. “I was honoured when Kim asked if I’d like to do this with him.” It’s not hard to see why: since taking the reins at Dior, Kim Jones has become something of a tastemaker. In previous work, the fashion designer has referenced artists like Otani Workshop and Hylton Nel, translating sartorial stories into new visual languages. It’s a true joint venture: Jones brings his co-stars into the design process, infusing the clothing with authentic contributions from his collaborators.

At its core, the collection is about fusion: a concept that permeates every garment, leaving an imprint on patterns, materials, and even production techniques. For Hamilton, that’s a green flag — the F1 driver says Jones understands his vision. “Our values and ideas are aligned,” says Hamilton, “making it easy to bring to life a creative collection infused with our shared experiences.”

The capsule circles the globe, drawing parallels between artistic traditions in Europe and Africa, synthesizing materials and practices. Jones and Hamilton break new ground, filling the Dior x Lewis Hamilton capsule with fresh, casual suiting, using traditional Dior tweeds and African weaves in equal measure. These materials carry symbolic significance, too: both men have “a desire to celebrate Africa, and an interest in the artisanal processes and techniques that unite craftspeople in Africa with the savoir-faire of the Dior ateliers,” says Jones.

Denim is the third pillar, fashioned from organic or recycled textiles. “We share a love of nature,” explains Jones. His portfolio reflects an appreciation for eco-friendly fashion. Under Jones, Dior has nimbly adjusted to climate concerns, partnering with Parley for the Oceans to create new fabrics from debris.

Working in apparel, nature — or perhaps more specifically, sustainability — is especially relevant. Clothing is intimately involved with material culture, interacting with environmental realities at multiple points in the process. Climate shapes consumer needs and production methods. It’s important to keep this in mind when crafting a new collection, Hamilton says. “Focusing on conscious choices and pushing boundaries with each piece, while merging inspiration from my roots in Africa — drawing from their fabrics and belief in natural materials, as well as vibrant colours and powerful energy — has been so inspiring,” adds the F1 driver.

In addition to the organic and recycled textiles, there’s also an emphasis on ‘non-disposable’ clothing — jackets, pants, and outwear go beyond a single season. Jones and Hamilton take inspiration from Japanese technical skiwear, finding ways to craft functional, fashionable protection from the elements. Rigorously constructed accessories include the Dior 8 Backpack and Messenger Rider 2.0, which are optimized to withstand debris in any climate (and sacrifice none of the trademark Dior sleekness to do so). Retro-inspired offerings, like the micro-fibre Dior Snow Derbys or B44 Blades, put a nostalgic spin on sustainable sportswear.

Comfort, a crucial component of outdoor culture, also carries weight in the new capsule. “I hope people everywhere feel good in these garments we designed so carefully,” Hamilton explains. It’s a fitting sentiment for a sportswear collection, as the category emphasizes durable design and utility. In fact, Jones credits Hamilton for instilling these values: “This collection also reflects Lewis’ sporting side, his virtuosity and our functionality,” says the designer.

Throughout the capsule, you’ll feel a palpable passion from both Jones and Hamilton — authenticity radiates from every thread. Remarking on the collaboration, Kim Jones says it best: “All in all, the way things came together happened very organically – and enjoyably!”
