An Icon With An Exotic Twist: Tudor Black Bay Chronograph Flamingo Blue

The flamingo is one of the world’s most iconic birds, whose quirky looks have earned it a place of honour as a campy lawn ornament and — all too briefly — as a flavour of Kool-Aid. The flamingo’s appeal is largely down to its combination of an oversized curved bill, long legs, and distinctive cotton candy-hued plumage. What most folks don’t know is that the flamingo’s colour is a direct result of its preferred diet of pink plankton, and the more plankton in a flamingo’s diet, the rosier its plumage becomes. All of this is to say that while there are many shades of pink flamingos found in the wild, a blue flamingo is not actually a thing. Unless, of course, we’re talking about the new Tudor Black Bay Chronograph Flamingo Blue.

The newest addition to the Tudor Black Bay Chronograph lineup, as you might have guessed, has less to do with ornithological accuracy and more to do with — as the kids say — vibes. Launched in January, when most of us in the Northern Hemisphere could use a dose of colour to make up for the cold, grey weather, the watch pays homage to the bright, cheerful pastels of Miami Beach. Miami also happens to be the home of Inter Miami CF, a Major League Soccer team co-owned by longtime Tudor ambassador David Beckham, for which Tudor serves as Official Timekeeper. Tudor released a previous edition of the Black Bay Chrono in the team’s signature shade of pink, and following the introduction of a “third kit” last summer in a very ‘80s shade of turquoise, the new watch fits nicely into the team’s colour palette.

By the numbers, the new Black Bay Chronograph is everything you’d expect from a top-tier Swiss watch, with a satin-brushed and polished 41mm case made from 316L stainless steel (the industry standard for high-end sports watches), a bezel with an aluminum tachymetre scale insert and a generous dollop of Grade A Swiss Super-LumiNova on the markers and “snowflake” hands. Likewise, the vertical clutch Tudor chronograph calibre MT5813, which like all new Tudor movements is made in-house, offers the benefits of a silicon balance spring, and a 70-hour power reserve, plus the accuracy and reliability that comes with a chronometer certification from the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

Reassuring as all of those specs are, they are but icing on a very fun, pastel blue cake. Style is nothing without substance, and — fortunately anyone in search of the perfect accessory to wear for their next stay at the Fontainebleau, or looking to channel Crockett and Tubbs in their prime — this watch has a surplus of both.
