Over in England, the crack team at Range Rover’s SV Bespoke department — an atelier where all our automotive dreams come true — have been hard at work this summer, perfecting a range of tasty new flavours and themes for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
Take, for example, the new SV Black theme, now available across both the full-size Range and the Sport. Both models were recently unveiled at the great British garden party that is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where they caused quite a stir.
The dipped-in-black look of the Range Rover SV Black is at once both understated and sinister, sophisticated and striking. Much like a perfectly tailored tux or an LBD, the blacked-out look is one that will always be in fashion.
True to its designers’ claim, the SV Black appears, “as if dipped in black mirror gloss.” To that end, the exterior is painted a rich Narvik Gloss Black with matching details and exclusive finishes never before offered on the Range Rover SV. It really is all in the details with this one. Mesh in the grille is polished Gloss Black, same as the lettering on the hood, the brake calipers, the 23-inch alloy wheels and the black ceramic SV roundel.
While the exterior is all gloss, the interior embraces a moodier satin tone. The near-aniline Ebony leather seats have a single‑panel cover for the first time. Range Rover describes it as a luxurious new finish with fewer stitch lines and seams. While the design team could’ve gone for piano black trim, we’re glad they zagged and chose black birch wood veneer for the dashboard and console. The result is a cabin with real warmth and tactile presence. Even the gear shifter is finished in satin black ceramic, and Moonlight Chrome detailing is everywhere you look.
Beneath the SV Black’s plush carpets is new Sensory Floor technology, extending the immersive thrum and haptic feedback of the Body‑And‑Soul‑Seat (BASS) all the way to your feet. Listening to the Meridian stereo is now, truly, a whole-body experience.
Under the hood is Range Rover’s muscular and refined 607-horsepower V8 MHEV engine. And despite that monster motor, the company is nodding to sustainability with an industry-first Pirelli P Zero tire made using bio-based and recycled materials — including silica from rice husks, recycled steel and plant‑based oils and resins. These new tires will roll out on selected 22‑inch wheel options on Range Rover, starting with the SV Black.
And, just to clear up any confusion here about the growing range of SV Bespoke offerings, the new SV Black is available alongside the existing Range Rover SV Serenity and Range Rover SV Intrepid.
Not to be forgotten, the Range Rover Sport SV Black receives a similarly monochromatic makeover inside and out. The key difference here is that the Sport is treated to the firm’s exclusive 626-horsepower 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that churns out a whopping 553 lb-ft of torque. It’ll handle as sharp as it looks too, thanks to the brand’s brilliant 6D Dynamics suspension system with hydraulically-linked anti-roll system that works to tame the SUV’s natural pitch and roll motions.
And that’s not even the full list of everything SV Bespoke has been busy with this summer. They’re also now offering Satin Forged carbon-fibre package, which sees the grille, vents, various trim pieces and exhaust tips finished in a marble-like carbon texture.
Or there’s the Twill carbon-fibre package with exposed carbon hood finished in the traditional diagonal-pattern. It’s available with either the Marl Grey or Ligurian Black paint on the Range Rover Sport SV.
And we haven’t even explored the dazzling range of Ultra Metallic paints that SV Bespoke has cooked up, not to mention all the additional leathers, two-tone interiors, wood marquetry, ceramic surfaces, new types of cutting-edge carbon fibre, a dazzling range of Ultra Metallic paints and so much more. (And yes, naturally, Range Rover also offers a “match-to-sample” paint service should you wish to have a truly one-of-one vehicle.)
While most other luxury car brands might offer a handful of basic options, and maybe a paint-to-sample service if you’re lucky, Range Rover’s SV Bespoke division offers over 1,500 unique interior combinations. Combine those with the exterior options, and the possibilities are endless.
Which is why, in our not-so-humble opinion, there’s never been a better time to buy a Range Rover. This benchmark of modern luxury — an icon in its own right — remains at the top of its game, with more ways than ever before to make it unmistakably yours.
