Home of the Week: Courtyard House, Japan

Here’s a testament to minimalist decor.

Drab and monochrome, this pale grey, industrial-like one-storey dwelling by Kouichi Kimura Architects is at odds with its traditional surroundings of sweeping farmland and timber-built Japanese homesteads….but in the best possible way.

The corrugated-metal clad blocks are arranged in a U-shape, creating a private inner courtyard, which is dressed in a clean grey gravel and accessorized with a linear water basin that draws the eye out of the modern structure toward the rural landscape.

Glass doors open to the interior, where the open-concept living space is furnished with concrete ledges and platforms creating a handsome aesthetic throughout.
