Watch The Trailer For ‘Midnight Special,’ Next Year’s Coolest Sci-Fi Thriller
It’s a phenomenon that’s been discussed to death at this point, but for sci-fi fans — or, really, movie fans in general — it’s been more than a little bittersweet to watch so many promising young filmmakers get swept up into major franchises over the last few years.
Yes, we’re excited to see what Rian Johnson will do with Episode VIII. And sure, Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One sounds pretty cool, too. But wouldn’t you rather bear witness to a completely new, original vision from either of those guys? Something that will delight and disturb and command your attention through sheer inventiveness alone the way that Looper or Monsters did?
Luckily, there are still guys like Jeff Nichols out there. Coming off 2012’s critically-acclaimed Mud, the 36-year-old director could have taken on just about any project he wanted. He chose to make something of his own, a film called Midnight Special, whose first trailer was just released earlier this week:
With a talented cast headlined by Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst and regular Nichols collaborator Michael Shannon, it looks like exactly the kind of mysterious, artful and imaginative genre thrill-ride we’ve been waiting for. Midnight Special hits theaters March 18th, 2016. Go see it, and help ensure it doesn’t become the last of its ilk.
