Here’s How to Age Like Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe has the type of face you badly want to punch — mostly because it seems incapable of aging. At 52, the Parks and Recreation alum still has the beaming blue eyes, thick hair, and taut skin he had as a Brat Packing ’80s teen idol. What’s even more annoying: he’s too damn nice to hate. He’s not only humble about his looks, he’s eager to share the secrets of his eternal youth.

Last year, he debuted Profile, a men’s skincare line he financed and co-developed himself, based on the serums and goops that’ve kept him radiant as a Honolulu sunrise. He gave us a primer on being, literally, the most pathologically handsome and enthusiastic fiftysomething alive.

What’s the secret to looking like Rob Lowe? Out with it.

Well, first, a disclaimer: genetics are a big part of anybody’s life, including mine. My dad is a still a great looking guy. He’s 75 and looks like Paul Newman. But also, the best in the business have been taking care of my skin since I was 15. I’d walk in and they’d put on moisturizer and sunscreen and do all the things I now know guys need to do. And so I’m offering guys what people have been doing for me for years. You can’t expect results without doing something to help yourself. There’s no free lunch.

You’re also the spokesperson for life insurance company Genworth Financial. What’s something about getting older that men don’t think about enough?

There comes a time in every guy’s life where there’s that fork in the road. Someone once asked Clint Eastwood, “You’re 88-years-old and directing your umpteenth movie. How do you do it?” And he said, “I never let the old man in.” I found that very profound. On a daily basis, I make a choice: to be vital, to be interested, to be connected, to be interesting, to be current. And there’s a whole other path where you’re less interested, you’re less connected. Your world gets smaller. There are plenty of people on that path. I’m not. Everybody has that choice.

Honestly, aging scares me. Does it scare you at all?

No! I have a healthy respect for it. Many of my heroes are a lot older than I am. People I envy, people I want to emulate. Old age is not a very happy place if you haven’t prepared for it. You see that a lot. But people who’ve taken care of themselves, whether it’s literally by how they appear or doing the work inside themselves — have an amazing quality of life when they get older. That’s when you have the most wisdom, the most experience. People look up to you.

Hmm. Getting over that hill sounds kind of nice.

It’s great. But not if you’ve just fucked off your whole life and then woken up and you’re 75. That’s not great. You’ve got to put in the work. I mean, that’s the journey we’re all here for, really. Growing, living our lives from the beginning to the end, is the greatest journey a human being can take. Other than being an astronaut. I really believe it!
