I always knew my dentist was a sadist. Now I know he’s a liar, too. According to an investigation by the Associated Press, there is zero evidence to back up Big Dentistry’s claims that flossing daily will prevent gum disease and cavities.
The AP filed Freedom of Information requests with the U.S. government, asking for the research behind their flossing recommendations. The government wrote back saying they couldn’t deliver on the requests because, again, there is no evidence that flossing does anything. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
Even the flossing industry, which is worth $2 billion globally, is kind of at a loss to describe what’s going on. “Johnson & Johnson spokesman Marc Boston said floss helps remove plaque. When the AP sent him a list of contradicting studies, he declined comment.”
Which is to say: “Welp, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.”
