This Nautical-Themed J.Crew Collection Will Help Save Blue Whales

Remember back in 2014, when nine blue whales tragically became trapped in ice and died off the coast of Newfoundland? It was a truly heartbreaking turn of events, but it’s since led to about as positive an outcome as one could reasonably expect.

The preserved skeleton of one of two whales that washed up on the shores of Newfoundland is at the heart of “Out of the Depths,” a new exhibition about the world’s largest mammal, which opens Saturday at the Royal Ontario Museum. And, to commemorate the landmark exhibit and support the ROM’s Blue Whale Project, J.Crew has launched a limited-edition collection as part of their Garments for Good program.

The capsule has nautical inspirations and consists of a tee, Breton stripe shirt, tote, and bandanas. Each piece features a print of hand-sketched whales by the brand’s head of women’s design, Somsack Sikhounmuong, who grew up in Oshawa and reminisced about childhood trips to the ROM at the launch of the exhibit.

It’s a stylish step above the souvenir trinkets you typically find at museums, and 50 per cent of each sale will be donated to the ROM’s research into the understanding and conservation of the threatened species. Look good and do good, what could be better?
