1. Drones are the new lifeguards
“Two teenage boys were rescued by a brand new lifesaving drone in Australia while lifeguards were still training to use the device. The swimmers, aged 15-17, had got into difficulties off the coast of Lennox Head, New South Wales (NSW).
“A member of the public spotted them struggling in heavy surf about 700m (2,300ft) offshore. Lifesavers instantly sent the drone to drop an inflatable rescue pod, and the pair made their way safely to shore.”

2. This retired Brit spent over 400 hours making a steam-powered Land Rover
“There’s something magical about a car modification that costs over $30,000 and results in making a car that’s louder, rougher, smokier and objectively less useful than when you started. It’s also now only capable of 15 mph. And yet, somehow, the car is so much better than before.
“It took about 400 hours and a lot of not talking to his wife or anyone about what he was doing, but Rothwell eventually managed to swap the 2.25-liter, 74 horsepower gasoline motor from the Landie for a coal-fed steam engine that eats 100 pounds of coal per hour.”

3. Fashion Beans’ best-dressed men list this week
“For a clan as well-dressed as the Beckhams, fashion week is a family affair. And, as per usual, David and Brooklyn’s latest outing in Paris didn’t disappoint, with dad and lad both flexing some easy-to-wear texture via mottled wool and herringbone overcoats. The family that frow together, grow together.
“Despite a leading role in poker thriller Molly’s Game, Idris Elba’s Sundance gear left nothing to chance. The 45-year-old used his winter wardrobe ace in the hole – the parka jacket – to add bulk to his considerable frame and raise his monochrome staples with some luxe-looking texture.”
4. Steven Soderbergh is thinking of switching to iPhones to shoot his movies
“The biggest story around Unsane might not be its release strategy. Taking a page from Sean Baker’s Tangerine, Soderbergh shot the whole movie on an iPhone. While Baker has said he used a phone instead of traditional cameras due to budgetary constraints, Soderbergh said he was so impressed with the quality of iPhone cinematography that he would likely continue to use phones to shoot his movies going forward.
“‘People forget, this is a 4k capture. I’ve seen it 40 feet tall. It looks like velvet. This is a gamechanger to me,’ said Soderbergh.”
