The 2025 BMW M5 Wagon is Here. We Only Had to Wait 40 Years.

Today, BMW unveiled a car some of us have been waiting 40 years to get our hands on. The absurd all-new 2025 M5 Touring is here, and this time it’s finally coming to Canadian showrooms. Finally! That sound you hear is the collective sigh of thousands of M Division fans all breathing a sigh of relief. This is their white whale. For everyone else, it might just be the last car you ever need.

Okay — But What Is the 2025 BMW M5 Touring?

BMW M5 Touring Wagon

It’s a wicked-fast plug-in hybrid station wagon. (Touring is BMW-speak for wagon.) The 2025 M5 serves up supercar-level shove — 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque — from an interesting plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain. It’ll haul groceries and haul… well, you get the idea.

On the combustion side, the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 alone offers 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from 1,800-5,400 rpm. An electric motor is integrated into eight-speed automatic transmission, and it offers an additional 194 ponies and 207 torques. That electric motor pulls electricity from a 14.8 kWh lithium-ion battery sitting under the floor. It’s very similar to the powertrain in BMW’s XM, but in a much lower (read: better handling) chassis. It’ll hit 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and go on to 305 km/h if you’ve got enough space.

Of course, the whole chassis has been upgraded to cope with so much power; there’s underfloor bracing, optional carbon-ceramic brakes, redesigned kinematics and suspension with adaptive dampers, four-wheel steering, an active differential, M-specific all-wheel drive that can be switched to rear-wheel drive mode at the push of a button.

OMG….

Yes, now you’re getting it. The M5 Touring is a crazy mashup of supercar power, sedan handling, SUV cargo space and station-wagon style. It’s like the result of some late-night Bavarian-lager-fueled ‘What If’ sessions that got out of hand.

Why Has It Taken 40 Years To Get an M5 Touring in Canada?

It’s not because the folks at M Division in Germany wanted to keep their best cars for themselves. The sad truth is Canada (and the U.S.) are not station-wagon markets. Drivers here typically buy SUVs and pickup trucks. Collectively, those two segments make up well over 80 per cent of all new-vehicle sales in Canada. Station wagons are a niche, and BMW is trying to turn a profit; it’s hard to make money selling only a handful of cars. But, as machines like the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG E63 Wagon have proved in recent years, there is demand in North-American for exclusive, luxurious, high-performance wagons. The drivers who want cars like this really want them, and they have the deep pockets to make it happen.

BMW Canada put a poll on its website asking Canadians to speak up if they want the M5 Touring. It raked in 7,500 signatures in just a few days. As a result, for the first time, Canadian drivers will now be able to choose either the M5 sedan or the M5 wagon.

What’s the Driving Range in EV Mode?

BMW claims its new uber-wagon has “up to 40 kilometres” of driving range in EV mode.

So, What’s the Catch?

Well, all this hybrid tech adds weight. The M5 sedan tips the scales at 2,445 kilograms while the wagon is 2,508 kg. It’s a chonky boy for sure.

Then again, it’s like three cars in one. The M5 Touring will haul you and all your buddies and all their stuff, plus a dog, to the cottage. When it’s done that, the M5 Touring will shuttle you back and forth to work during the week on battery-power alone. It’ll also carry your kids and all their gear with room to spare. On the weekend, it’d be up for a track day or two. So what if it weighs approximately as much as an aircraft carrier? Rumour has it it’s actually powered by a nuclear reactor and it may be able to launch F35s in the South China Sea. We’ll find out soon enough.

What’s the Canadian Price of the 2025 BMW M5 Touring?

It’ll set you back $138,000 in Canada, and that’s just the base price, excluding tasty options like carbon-ceramic brakes.

When Will the 2025 BMW M5 Touring Be Available in Canada?

So far, all we know is the worldwide launch will start at the tail end of 2024. Canadian customers who want one can reserve their M5 Touring on BMW’s official site right here.
