Toronto Menswear Icon Saul Korman Passes Away
Menswear icon Saul Korman, owner of Korry’s Clothiers on Danforth Avenue in Toronto, passed away on Sunday evening. He was 86.
Hailing from a small town in Quebec, Korman took over his father’s Toronto store in the 1950s and quickly built a reputation as one of the premier clothiers in the city. He told Sharp in a 2014 interview that he “wouldn’t call [himself] a stylish fellow, but [he] always liked fashion. [He] wore alligator shoes when [he] was 18.”
Korman was also a frequent guest on Bob McCown’s show The Fan 590, and known for his live, freestyle radio ads on 102.1 CFNY and Q107. McCown affectionately referred to him as “a dear friend for at least 40 years…one of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever known.”
Over his formidable career, Korman accrued many accolades including a Business Excellence Award in 2015 and a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal in 2002, and was also known for his philanthropic efforts. Mayor John Tory, a longtime Korry’s regular, remembers Korman as “an ambassador, the salesperson, the inspiration that helped make the Danforth what it is today: a destination.”
