‘The Young Pope’ Is the New HBO Show We Didn’t Know We Needed

Everyone’s still buzzing about HBO’s Westworld — not to mention that other show of theirs, you know, the one with the dragons and all that — but the premium cable network is already looking ahead to its next great drama series. Try to wrap your noggin around this one: it’s about the Pope, and it looks straight-up dope. (Rhyme fully intended.)

Headlined by Jude Law and Diane Keaton, and directed by The Great Beauty‘s Paolo Sorrentino, The Young Pope follows Lenny Belardo, the youngest pope ever selected and the first American to don the funny ha— er, I mean, papal tiara. (Unfortunately, he won’t actually be known as Pope Lenny, opting for the irrefutably lamer title of Pius XXXI, instead.) If the ominous and addictive music from the first official trailer is any indication, it appears the new Bishop of Rome harbours his fair share of deep dark secrets.
