What Was This Year’s Most Exciting News in Racing?
Earlier this year, 37-year-old German racer Timo Bernhard smashed the Nordschleife lap record, a record set 35 years ago by Stefan Bellof, a record nobody thought would ever be broken.
Bernhard piloted the hybrid Porsche 919 Evo racecar around the treacherous circuit in five minutes, 19.55 seconds, nearly a minute faster than Bellof. Bernhard’s wife gave birth to their third child, a girl, just a week before.
Speaking over the phone, Bernhard said of his record lap: “It was like flying a jet in a living room. It’s a bit insane….It felt like fast-forward. There’s no other way to describe it.”
