Will Smith Looks Slightly Less Weird (and Raps) in the New Aladdin Trailer
The first trailer for the live-action remake of Aladdin scared people shitless with Will Smith’s CG-ified Genie looking something like an Avatar extra as viewed through a Snapchat filter. The newest trailer seems like an attempt to get fans singing a different tune — by showing the film’s characters literally singing various tunes.
This time around we hear Smith belting — er, rapping? — “Friend Like Me,” and Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and Jasmine (Naomi Scott) dueting “A Whole New World.” The performances aren’t half bad! We also get an indication that Smith won’t be blue for the entire movie, though he’ll still be rocking the unfortunate topknot-goatee look.
Will this film undo decades of problematic Orientalist portrayals of Arabs in American pop culture? Proooobably not. Buy, hey, at least we get another Will Smith movie rap song!
