SHARP Escapes: Find Your Bliss at Casacosta Tenerife
While winter will likely make a last-gasp attempt to hang on for just a little bit longer, there’s no denying that spring is on the horizon — and many of us have sun, warm weather, and luxury on the brain as a result. After trudging through the cold, wintry weather for months on end, there’s nothing quite like a springtime vacation to cure all that ails you, and we’ve discovered the perfect spot to help you relax, recharge, and soak up some much-needed vitamin D and good vibes.
In the Canary Islands of Spain, located just 20 minutes from the Tenerife airport, sit a pair of updated modernist villas just waiting to be rented by vacationers who long to look out at the sea while soaking in a pool or sipping a cold cocktail on a glamorous terrace. Originally built in the 1970s, these gems were rediscovered by an architect and collector, Susan Theunissen and Leo Coolen, while on vacation, and the couple gave the villas an impressive 21st-century update while staying true to their vintage bones.
The first modernist villa, called Casacosta Tenerife, includes eight bedrooms and can sleep up to 17 people. It sits high on a jagged cliff, overlooking the stunning sea below, and features an open-plan concept, a remodelled kitchen, a large entry hall, spacious outdoor terraces on multiple levels, and a luxurious circular pool. The home is perfect for entertaining thanks to its ample space including ‘70s-inspired dens, a large dining area, and a vintage private bar made of dark, textural rock sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time to the grooviest of all eras.
Just one level down from the larger, main house is Casacosta Nextdoor — the more intimate of the two villas. It sits closer to the sea and feels wilder as a result, yet its unique, rockstone ceilings offer the same 1970s vibes as the main home. It features an open-plan concrete kitchen and dining area, as well as multiple terraces with unobstructed sea vistas, and three bedrooms which altogether can sleep up to six people.
Located far away from Tenerife’s more touristy areas, these villas sit in the quiet village of El Poris. With literally zero hotels in the town, you’re surely in for an authentic travel experience filled with snorkelling, surfing, diving, hiking, cycling, whale-watching, and some peace and quiet if you want it. Open-air farmers’ markets, beach bars, and local restaurants will ensure you’re well fed during your getaway, and you can easily make your way to livelier parts of the island if you’re looking for a night out on the town.
Prices for the larger villa start at €700 per night ($982 CAD), while the smaller home starts at €240 per night ($336 CAD), and the homes can either be rented separately or together. Your oasis awaits!
